Program Enhances Management Skills to Improve Patient Care

LOS ANGELES — L.A. Care Health Plan, the largest publicly-operated health plan in the country, is proud to announce a third session of its Physician Leadership Program will kick off today. The program is designed to enhance the leadership and management skills of physicians serving the health care needs of our most vulnerable members — those struggling with homelessness, trauma from incarceration, poverty, and mental health issues.

Traditional medical education focuses on the clinical aspects of practice. This program will prepare physicians for leadership responsibilities that will help accelerate change in the health care safety net and ultimately improve patient experience and care.

Twenty-two physicians will be in this session of the six-month program. Physicians who have been through earlier sessions of the program say it empowered them to ask for changes in their practice management and, ultimately, that has made for better physician-patient relationships.

"I often felt powerless, and struggled with my lack of input into the care of my patients outside of making medical decisions," said Eric Schluederberg, M.D. from Kheir Center. "The program made me aware than I'm not the only one, and it provided me with ideas that are helping me make meaningful changes in my practice."

This session of the L.A. Care Physician Leadership Program consists of six in-person seminars and five webinars. Among the topics to be addressed: Leadership Style and Serving Underserved Communities, Leading Effective Teams, Managing Health Care Services and Finances, and Improving Services.
