Appointments and Getting Care

As a member of L.A. Care Health Plan, it’s vital to get the right kind of care when you need it. But first you need to know the types of care offered and when is the right time to use them.

Routine Care

Routine care is normal care you get from your doctor. This care may be checkups, physicals or taking care of a long-term health issue.

Urgent Care

This type of care is for a health issue that needs to be treated within 24 hours but won't cause death. Often, you can get urgent care if you are not able to see your normal doctor.

Emergency Care

This type of care is for health issues that could cause death and that need care right away.

How to Get Care

  1. Call your doctor. You may speak to an operator who answers calls for your doctor’s office when it is closed.

  2. Ask to speak to your doctor or the doctor on call. A different doctor may answer your call if yours is not able to do so. A doctor is on hand by phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and also on weekends and holidays.

  3. Describe your health problem and follow any directions that are given.
